This week I have finished assigning call new call numbers and labeling books in the IPCC youth collection! Since my initial post, quite a few changes have been made. The entire collection is more visible for patrons and has been moved from the stacks towards the entrance of the library. The shelving is stand alone, lower, and overall much more kid-friendly. Displays are also much more accessible for children and teens.

Additionally, I fixed some mistakes such as updating the youth bilingual and language call numbers to include the name of the language (see image below). I also spent quite a bit of time reviewing books and changing the call numbers I had originally assigned. These were often books that I consider middle grade, which could be assigned to either the children’s or teen collection. My determinations were often based on comparing collections to see where certain books were more needed.

I have loved working on this project and hope to be able to work on a similar project someday in the context of a different library. I’m excited to see youth and families interact with the collection and teach them how to use it, especially when the library begins circulating later this year. In addition to the call number guides I made earlier this year, I also have created a youth collection scavenger hunt for kids to be used after the IPCC Saturday storytimes or as passive programming.
